Fargo Home Builder and Remodel: Home Theatre Tips

Your computers are networked at the office, why not have them networked at home? Forget the peephole on the front door – get a television quality image as your guests walk up the porch, without having to leave the kitchen.

Whether watching the latest James Bond flick or the kids’ favorite Power Rangers, view it from a home theater system instead of wiggling the television rabbit ears to get better reception, and hoping the video tape hasn’t broken. With rapid advances in electronics, home wiring is more affordable and available than ever.

Closets are converting into server rooms or hubs, holding CD players, home theater equipment, amplifiers and DVD players. With each room wired for music, a remote control device allows dad to grill steak outside, listening to classical music on satellite radio, while his daughter listens to the latest High School Musical CD in her bedroom. Closed-circuit television systems allow mom to glance up from her work in the den, making sure the baby hasn’t climbed out of the crib.

Setting up the house wiring for the home entertainment center as well as home networking takes some time and energy, but it pays off in the long run. Your home will be vastly more marketable when reselling it, and you can enjoy music, entertainment and kid monitoring at the touch of a button.

While many homeowners have their equipment in full view of guests, following a home wiring guide allows you to hide the wiring and equipment, for easy access but less clutter. Plus it’s difficult to hack into a wired home without entering it. Wireless is available as well, though less secure. If going the wireless route, be sure to set up the security features.

Basement Remodeling in Fargo

Basement Remodeling

Basement Remodeling in Fargo

What should I do first?

You will need to determine what you will be using the finished space for. Some homeowners choose to remodel or finish only part of their basement by simply creating one extra bedroom with adjoining bathroom, leaving the remainder of the area unfinished for storage or workshop space. Other homeowners choose to finish the entire space in order to maximize the amount of livable space in their home.

Many homeowners with young children or teenagers opt to finish their basements in order to create a game room or media room for their children. Basement bars can make get-togethers and holiday parties fun for adults. Some people even choose to implement miniature golf into their basement remodeling project. Several homeowners decide to create a combination of the basement remodeling ideas mentioned above.

By adding one or two extra bedrooms with a full bathroom, an exercise room, and a theatre room, many homeowners are able to significantly increase the resale value of their home. There are several factors for homeowners to consider when making the decision about what type of basement remodeling project to pursue. The list of questions below will help you to determine which basement remodeling idea will work best for you and your family.

Do you have children or teenagers living at home in Fargo?

If you have children or teenagers living at home, consider a design idea that would allow your kids or teens to have a gathering place for entertaining their friends. Many homeowners with teens choose to create one large media room with a full bathroom. Don't forget to leave room in the budget for a pool table and big screen! This will keep their messes confined to the basement which is always a plus!

Remember that this type of basement remodel is also fun for adults. While the kids are away at camp, cuddle up with your spouse on your micro suede sectional and watch a DVD or blue ray disk in HD while enjoying your surround sound theatre equipment! Other options for enhancing the level of entertainment in your basement are popcorn makers and bars.

Do you do a lot of entertaining in Fargo?

If you and your spouse frequently host the annual New Year's Eve party and Superbowl Sunday festivities, consider including a full bar, mini-kitchen, and theatre sound into your basement remodeling design. Now, all you'll need is a little Marvin Gaye, some wine for the wine cooler, beer for the fridge and a few bottles of your favorite liquors to get the party started!

Do you frequently entertain company from out of town who need a more private place to sleep and bathe than your main floor spare bedroom?

If your mother-in-law likes to drop in for two week stays, make it easier on everyone and offer her premium comfort and peace in one of the new bedrooms in your basement. This way she won't be bothered with the hall traffic she'd have to deal with staying in the room between the kids' rooms. And you won't wake her before you leave for a busy day at the office or a day packed full of errands!

Have many of your neighbors completed their basement remodeling projects?

This factor is important because if many of your neighbors are undergoing basement remodeling projects, then you may want to seriously consider jumping on the band wagon. Everyone knows the expression, "Keeping up with The Jones'," right? Well, this is one area where you will want to keep up!

Just like you wouldn't want to have the most expensive house in your subdivision, you certainly done want to own the least expensive one. If you decide to remodel your basement, take a look at your neighbors remodeling ideas before making any definite decisions, unless of course you don't have plans to sell your home for at least 10 years.

Do you or anyone in your family exercise regularly?

If you enjoy working out, but keep your exercise equipment in the garage or in the spare bedroom closet, think about incorporating a place to exercise into your basement remodeling plans. Many people who have done this have actually found that having a designated place in their home to exercise actually increased their adherence to a work out regimen. So, perhaps if you are thinking about starting a work out plan, this is a great way to encourage yourself to participate.

All of the basement remodeling ideas above can be as simple or as involved as your budget allows. You can certainly build a media room without a 60" plasma television and scored and stained concrete. And you can definitely add a bar to your remodeling plans without including a wine cooler and granite countertops.

Now that you have determined what you would like to use the space in your basement for, the next step in planning your basement remodeling project is determining your budget parameters.

Roofing Costs in Fargo

Roofing costs can vary greatly throughout the country. So, you shouldn't expect your Fargo roofing costs to be the same as Moorhead roofing costs. An average roofing figure is also hard to pin down because of the differences in low-end and high-end costs. Roofing installation can cost anywhere from $50 to $1000 per square (a square is a 10 ft. x 10 ft. area). However, you should expect to pay, at least, $300 per square for top quality roofing shingles. The biggest factor in roofing costs is material, but a number of other factors can attribute to the costs of your roofing system.

General factors affecting roofing costs in fargo:

  • Material-Slate roofing costs more than asphalt roofing. Select a roofing material that's appropriate for your budget. There's a big enough selection of roofing materials available that you're sure to find something that fits in with your roofing costs.
  • Area size-The physical size of your roof will naturally affect your roofing costs. The more roofing area you have, the more roofing material will be needed.
  • Removal of Existing Roofing System-Tear off costs can vary depending on the number of layers of roofing shingles that may need to be removed. Any damaged decking underneath can also raise roofing costs. A roofer or roofing contractor will need to inspect your existing roof to be able to give an accurate estimate of roof removal costs.
  • Time of Year- The best pricing from roofing contractors usually occurs in the winter for projects beginning in the early spring.

Regional factors also apply to roofing costs in fargo:

  • Market Size-Smaller markets don't always carry the materials you're looking for. This can make roofing costs a matter of supply and demand. If the roofing material you've chosen is scarce in your area then you should expect to pay much more
  • Industry Trends-Besides market size, industry trends will dictate the availability of certain building materials. The roofing material most popular in your region will be far more affordable than others.
  • Accessibility-How easy it is for a certified roofer to access your roof will affect your roofing costs. The price of roofing a downtown high-rise will be much different than that of a single story suburban home. The easier the roofing installation is, the less expensive the costs will generally be.

Bathroom Remodeling in Fargo North Dakota.

Bathroom Remodeling

Bathroom Remodeling in Fargo North Dakota

Across the country, thousands of homeowners are remodeling their master bathrooms or powder rooms. If you live in Fargo, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or New York City and you haven't made your bathroom remodeling and design ideas a priority, I am going to help you get started. It can certainly be intimidating to begin a major project like kitchen or bathroom remodeling, but with a little patience and careful planning, you will be glad that you opted to do it!

Not only will remodeling your master bathroom or powder room increase the resale value of your home, but think about how great it will feel to take a shower in your newly floor-to-ceiling tiled walk-in shower. In fact, you'll probably find yourself washing twice as many towels and wash-cloths!

Once you've had the pleasure of indulging in a hot bubble bath in your new Jacuzzi tub or experienced the effects of a quadruple shower head configuration, you might just have to call in sick for a few days while you take a vacation in your new bathroom! We remodeled our master bathroom about a year ago, put in a marble shower large enough for eight people to comfortably stand and I still get excited every morning about getting clean!

Bringing my bathroom remodeling ideas to life

First, just like kitchen remodeling, you should always browse through your favorite magazines, walk down the street to check out your neighbors' kitchens or attend that home show coming to your town to get an idea of what you'd like your bathroom remodeling plans to look like. Once you've decided which ideas are worth further exploration, decide which elements of your bathroom you'd like to modify. Structural consequences can have a drastic effect on homeowners decision making process when it comes to bathroom remodeling.

There are two ways to approach this part of the planning process. One is to decide up front what rough in plumbing fixtures (tubs, showers, toilets, sinks) you plan to move or replace and then ask your architect to draft the plans based on your selections for these items. Basically, he/she will design your bathroom remodel so that all of the fixtures you choose fit perfectly. The upside is that you will have the bathroom that you always wanted. The downside is that this could mean moving walls and plumbing supply and both are very costly.

The second option is to ask your designer or contractor to simply tell you what your fixture choices will be dimension-wise based on leaving your rough in plumbing as is. The limitation with the latter option is that you would have to choose bath tubs, cabinets, showers, etc. that work within the existing space constraints. The positive side is that you will save a lot of money by not moving your existing plumbing sources.

Perhaps you would much rather have a large walk-in shower and are not concerned with a bath tub at all. Or, maybe you're considering a Jacuzzi tub with a slightly smaller walk-in shower. Think about the needs of the people who will use the master bathroom.

If you bathe your children in your master bathroom each night, it probably isn't wise to eliminate your bath tub. If you and your spouse don't ever plan on taking long baths and would much rather optimize the art of creative showering concepts, then get rid of that tub and focus on creating your dream shower for two.

Homeowners often complain about the lack of cabinet space in their bathrooms. When working with your architect or designer, be sure to mention the need for extra storage if it applies to your family. There are all sorts of creative ways to incorporate tons of added storage without compromising the integrity of your new master bathroom design.

Maybe you are thinking that all your bathroom really needs is a facelift. Changing just the flooring or vanities or fixtures could be all you need to achieve the look that you desire for your bathroom.

One of the most prominent characteristics that I remember about the house I grew up in is that all of the bathrooms had colorful toilets, tubs and sinks. There were five bathrooms and each one of them had a personality of its own! Mine had yellow everything. From floors to the tub to the vanity to the toilet to the sink and even the toilet paper holder, everything was YELLOW!

The layout was perfect, but the color was a little flamboyant, so all they needed to do was update what was already there.

Kitchen Remodeling In Fargo North Dakota.

Everyone is remodeling their kitchen these days! Don't believe me? How many websites came up when you searched for kitchen remodeling ideas? Exactly... more than you can count! It isproven that in 2007 in many metropolitan US cities, there is an abundance of kitchen remodeling going on.

If you live in Fargo North Dakota, Dallas, Houston, San Diego, San Francisco, Los Angeles, or New York City and you haven't made your kitchen remodeling ideas a priority, it's time to get started. After all, we've all got to keep up with The Jones' right? It can certainly be intimidating to begin a major project like kitchen or bathroom remodeling, but with a little patience and careful planning, you will be glad that you opted to do it!

Not only will remodeling your kitchen increase the resale value of your house, but imagine how refreshing it will feel to step into your brand new kitchen each morning. In fact, you may even look for excuses to be in your kitchen once it is remodeled. I never enjoyed doing dishes prior to remodeling my kitchen. Now, as crazy as it sounds, I actually enjoy it. My husband wishes I felt the same way about the laundry room! Maybe he'll fund that one next...

How do I turn my kitchen remodeling ideas into a reality?

To start, consult your favorite magazines, check out your friends' kitchens or even attend a home show in your area to get an idea of what you'd like the finished product to look like.

Next, decide what characteristics of your kitchen you'd like to change. Perhaps you hate that your dishwasher and sink are on opposite sides of the kitchen and would prefer that they be adjacent to one another. Or, maybe you're considering incorporating a Sub Zero refrigerator in to your kitchen remodel design because your family has grown in numbers since you purchased your home.

Homeowners often complain about the lack of storage in their homes. When working with your designer, be sure to mention the need for extra storage if it applies to your family. There are all sorts of creative ways to incorporate tons of added storage without compromising the integrity of your new kitchen design.

Maybe your kitchen simply needs a facelift. Changing flooring, countertops and window treatments could be all you need to achieve the look that you desire for your kitchen.
